Sakela Invocation — Opening Chant

Opening invocation chanted by the Nakchhong priest at the beginning of Sakela festival celebrations. Followed immediately by the first Sili dance movements.

Transliteration

Sakela Sili Mundum

English Translation

O spirits of the earth and sky, we gather at the sacred ground. The drums are speaking, the cymbals are singing. We dance as our ancestors danced, as the birds dance in the sky, as the rivers dance to the sea. Sumnima, bless our feet. Paruhang, bless our song. We plant as you taught us to plant. We harvest as you taught us to harvest. In this circle we are one — one people, one earth, one dance.
